The organisation

The company is a world leader in providing mechatronics products, services and solutions to the semiconductor and automotive industry. Main manufacturing processes are stamping, etching, electro-plating and back-end processes of IC’s interconnectors.

Heavily committed to Asia, the company has several manufacturing plants in the region to support customers regionally and globally. As well, it has established strong sales and marketing presence throughout the region.

The position

The Managing Director Malaysia & Singapore will be responsible for the full range of general, operational, financial and, together with the VP Sales Asia, for sales, marketing and business development activities for the factories in Malaysia and Singapore.
The Managing Director Malaysia & Singapore is bottom line responsible for the P&L of Malaysia & Singapore.

Relationships

  • Reports to: Business Unit Director Semicon
  • Manages:
    • Factory Malaysia (2 production locations, 550 fte)
    • Factory Singapore (90 fte, sales $ 60 mio)
  • Other Key Relationships: Regional Financial Controller, colleague Managing Directors, Vice President Asia Sales, and other matrix relationships globally.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • After an initial thorough understanding of the Company’s products, services and customer base a quick start with improving manufacturing performance, especially in Malaysia
  • Improve, enforce, mentor, coach, build and retain the current management team into a cohesive team, highly motivated and driven in improving the operational and financial performance of the company
  • Improve companies lacking probability level
  • Mid-term (3-5 yr.) strategical challenge to grow Malaysia. Possible centralization from other Asian sites to Malaysia
  • In close cooperation with the Vice President Asian Sales develop a realistic but aggressive sales plan for the region to maximize market penetration and increase the visibility of the Company’s products and services in the region
  • In close cooperation with the Vice President Asian Sales develop annual sales plans (operational as well as strategic) and budgets in line with corporate objectives and customer needs, being personally responsible for negotiations, volume discounts, commissions etc.
  • Identify new product/market opportunities while understanding changing market trends and requirements.
  • Maintain close collaboration with Product Development to ensure speedy product development initiatives, and proper costing
  • Make joint calls with the  colleague Managing Directors  and business partners (distributors & agents) to strengthen understanding of customers’ requirements
  • Lead and support customer services in ensuring high level of service and response time
  • Provide annual budgets, 3-year plan and regular forecast to facilitate efficient production planning

Candidate profile

Key selection criteria:

  • Management experience in Asia is a must
  • University graduate with a recognised and relevant (technical or financial) degree
  • Minimum 15 years of post-qualification working experience in general management
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a significant end responsible management role
  • Must possess broad-based management skills to operate in a complex manufacturing environment
  • Ability to manage with a wide variety of personalities including Technical and Plant Managers, and local Purchasing Executives
  • Strong background in general manufacturing and recovery management for multinational companies
  • Capable of commanding the respect and cooperation of  management teams, employees, customers, subordinates, corporate counterparts, industry peers, as well as the industry as a whole
  • Strong understanding of the economics of the high-tech manufacturing business, particularly the semi-conductor companies

Ideal experience

  • Industry background: Manufacturing companies, especially those selling into the high-tech electronics companies
  • Current company: Subsidiary of a multinational manufacturing company, or similarly westernized Asian company operating in the regio    
  • Current position: Depending on the size of company and terminology used, could be a Chief Operational Officer, Managing Director, Regional Operational Director, experienced General Manager

  • Pragmatic and no nonsense mentality, hands-on and non-bureaucratic, with the ability to think “outside the box”

  • Self-motivated  with the ability to take temporary set-back and ambition to take a well-established regional business to greater height
  • Nationality open, ideally in his/her late 40s to mid-50s
  • A strong leader able to motivate, mentor, and coach his/her team and command the respect of customers, peers, and business associates
  •  An effective and articulate communicator, with strong interpersonal and follow-up skills
  • Self-starter who is an independent operator with a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness
  • Unquestioned personal integrity and professional ethics
