The position

Maastricht University is looking for a collaborative and experienced Managing Director for its School of Business and Economics (SBE). You will be responsible for the Administration Office and supporting the Dean in his managerial tasks.

In an environment committed to high quality education and research, the Managing Director will (help) lead on positive and exciting developments and endeavours within the Administration Office and the wider SBE. You will also join the college of university directors that ensure administrative collaboration across Maastricht University.

Tasks & responsibilities

As chief academic and administrative officer of SBE, the dean delegates the management responsibilities of the Administration Office to the Managing Director. The Managing Director will take an active lead in optimally aligning the Administration Office’s activities with the challenges of and developments in the school in support of SBE’s strategy.

The SBE Administration Office (92 employees) runs and manages the operation of the faculty. The Managing Director is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the faculty, including amongst others the Education and Exams Office, international relations, PR and communication, marketing and student recruitment, and student advising.

The Managing Director is as a member of the Faculty Board, officially as secretary, but in practice as a member of the team.

Candidate profile

  • You have a substantial number of years of line-management experience, preferably in an educational (academic) environment;
  • You have an affinity for and experience with educational processes; 
  • You are sensitive to the needs of an internationally oriented education and research organisation. You have experience in managing staff with intercultural differences; and you speak Dutch and English fluently;
  • You have relevant experience in financial management, budgeting processes, and financial reporting and control;
  • You are capable of developing and implementing new HRM practices and coaching colleagues in their HRM responsibilities;
  • You have an entrepreneurial spirit;
  • You are able to develop relevant networks (within UM, with external stakeholders, and in business and educational circles);
  • You are a leader, an inspiring coach for the members of your MT. You can take the ‘no. 1’ position but you are also able to facilitate others in that role. You can be demanding but are also realistic regarding the constraints of the organisation;
  • You are a professional negotiator with a strong personality;
  • You have an open attitude, and are accessible for staff and students.
  • You are able to engage with academic and support staff in a dialogue of mutual understanding. 
  • You are prepared to work on a daily basis in Maastricht.
