Headhunter
Lintberg for Moco Museum

The organisation

Founded in 2016 in Amsterdam, the Moco Museum is a museum with a wide range of inspiring modern and contemporary art. Featuring artists such as Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, JR, KAWS, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol and more, we offer visitors an unparalleled collection of art that uses irony and humor as a means to reflect on the modern society. The organisation is characterised by an innovative, dynamic and enterprising character with a young and close-knit team. The concept has been so successful that Moco now has ambitious plans to scale internationally.

Moco (Modern Contemporary) Museum represents an innovative concept within the museum world, inviting young generations to get to know art and the creators behind it. Its message ‘In art we trust’ showcases a deep sense of purpose, whereby art is a vehicle that invites visitors to open up. The founders are Kim and Lionel Logchies: a married couple with extensive experience in the world of art galleries, and a good sense of what an audience wants to see.

Moco aims to represent ‘the voice of the street’ – contemporary art that resonates with young generations who don’t necessarily have a history of looking at art, but who do interact with culture on a daily basis through music and (online) media. Activism, asking questions, and having an outspoken identity are some of the features that connect this audience and turn it into a community. Moco is always on the lookout for ways to cultivate this community and make it come to life.

All the pieces are showcased within a setting that further enhances the experience: lots of attention is paid to the location, the museum building and its look and feel. Without consciously trying to do so, Moco breathes inclusivity. During the lockdown, the Moco app guided fans and would-be visitors through a (partially virtual) outside exhibit to keep the audience engaged and entertained.

Pre-COVID, 90% of the museum’s visitors in Amsterdam were foreign tourists. During the pandemic the museum managed to attract more local visitors: the split is now 50/50. The museum is very successful, partly due to its distinctive approach and social involvement, which is clearly evident from the quickly conquered place in the top 10 of most visited museums in Amsterdam. A large part of the visitors belong to the 'millennial' target group.

The concept works for different types of audiences – and since the tourist market is an attractive one for Moco, it makes sense to address that market in other locations as well. Barcelona was selected as the first location for international expansion. The focus for future expansion will be on London and Paris. By 2025, Moco wants to be a household name among European locals and travelers alike.

The position

The Chief Operating Officer will play an important role in the expansion of Moco. Moco strives for an unparalleled visitor experience and you will take the lead in developing, implementing and executing the operations strategy to achieve this goal. This includes structuring clear internal processes and guidelines, ensuring that everyone - from crew to floor manager - knows what is expected of them every moment of every day. The purpose and mission of Moco need to be reflected in every internal policy and way of working.

Of course, the strategic responsibility of the Chief Operating Officer goes beyond safeguarding the quality of Moco. With the original museum in Amsterdam, a recently opened location in Barcelona and a third museum opening in the foreseeable future, this will be a very hands-on and on-the-scene role at first. Once local Operations Managers and their teams are up and running under your leadership, the focus of the Chief Operating Officer will shift more towards strategic operational issues and challenges; naturally while continuously monitoring and steering the international locations with the C-level suite.

We expect you to transform the operations into a mature and future-proof infrastructure and, ultimately, develop the blueprint for ‘the’ Moco museum; a streamlined set of guidelines, processes and operational methods which can be implemented in current and future locations. You are the change agent to spearhead and pushback on new initiatives, all while taking into account the quality of everything Moco stands for.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate for this role has 5+ years experience in building up key operational structures from the start and can hit the ground running, ideally in an international, multi-location context. Relevant management experience can come from the hospitality industry (i.e. hotels, events, leisure), cultural institutions (museums, theaters) or from operational management in high-traffic buildings (office buildings, airports, etc.).

The strategic elements of the role require an academic level and a resourceful, problem-solving mindset. We are looking for someone with the capabilities to think strategically about quality and efficiency; someone with a multidisciplinary skill set and clear thoughts on how operations should be run (from the day-to-day to digital workflow tools) and who is able to convert these thoughts into sound strategic policies that will allow Moco to achieve its international ambitions for 2025 and beyond.

Moco’s international presence and the inclusive nature of what Moco represents, require a high level of cultural sensitivity. Successfully setting up local operations and teams not only demands top-notch interpersonal skills, but also your physical presence in the different museums - you will be required to travel to the cities where Moco is. Strong leadership and communication skills are required, as is an excellent command of the English language (additional languages are considered a big plus).

The offer

This is a highly exciting challenge for a real go-getter. Moco is an organisation on the move; this means there will be a lot for you to do, but also to do things your way. You will get to work in an environment where creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset are given room to blossom. The work atmosphere is very relaxed, the museum and office are beautifully located in the center of Amsterdam and - as a bonus - you get to visit other European hot spots. Salary indication is € 100.000 - 120.000.
