Top of Minds Executive Search for Formica

The organisation

Formica is a leading brand in surface materials used in furniture, kitchens, and interiors, including schools, hospitals, and retail- or hospitality outfits. As the inventor of high-pressure laminates about a century ago, the brand is well-known around the world. The United States has always been a key market, while currently also Asia is growing rapidly. In Europe, the company has around 600 employees. However, here Formica’s performance has suffered from a hands-off management style that led to negative results. Today, the company has been stabilized and is ready for further growth in the region.

In 2019, Broadview Holding, a Netherlands-based industrial holding with a significant presence in material technology and energy owned by HAL investments, acquired Formica Group. This has boosted Formica Europe’s efforts in reclaiming its market position. Primarily, the company is bringing the business closer to the customer, while rebalancing operating expenses with revenues and restoring margins. For the latter, Formica has intensified cooperation with sister companies (such as Arpa, Trespa, Westag, and Homapal) to secure operational and commercial synergies. Recently, Formica Europe has introduced a “local for local” business approach supported by a decentralization of the back-office activities into the five commercial regions: Scandinavia, Finland & Baltics, UK & Ireland, Benelux, and Central Europe.

The position

Formica is the inventor of high-pressure laminates and a leading brand in surface materials since a century. Formica Europe, after a sluggish period, has been reinforced and is boosting growth. The People Capabilities Manager ensures alignment between strategy and organization/people, focused on talent management, succession planning and learning & development at multi-country level. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, autonomous HR professional to join a historic company and enable its successful operations and growth.

Tasks & responsibilities

The People Capabilities Manager is needed to ensure alignment between strategy and organization/people. At Formica Europe’s coordination office in The Netherlands, the Managing Director works with the Head of Finance and two Business Analysts to support main challenges across the markets/businesses and drive improvement initiatives. The team coordinates all activities of the two factories and five commercial regions. The People Capabilities Manager is directly part of this highly ambitious team. The position reports to the Managing Director and is also closely connected to local HR business partners, commercial country leaders, and plant managers within the regions.

The People Capabilities Manager’s key priority is to develop a pragmatic capabilities strategy per region in line with the Formica Europe strategy. Key focus is on talent management, succession planning and learning & development programs. Activities include further developing the performance management cycles in the organization, imbedding the core values, supporting the roll-out of the company’s new HR system, advancing career development opportunities and salary benchmarking, and ensuring effective recruitment and selection processes for key positions. The role is hands-on and works closely with the local organizations in the countries, which means cultural sensitivity is highly valuable as well as an affinity with factory worker culture. Plant personnel represents around half of Formica Europe’s headcount.

In addition, the People Capabilities Manager is the eyes and ears in the countries for the Managing Director, and his sparring partner on organizational and capabilities issues and scenarios. Thus, the role asks for a strong sense of autonomy and proactive attitude.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, autonomous HR professional with cultural sensitivity to join a historic company and enable its successful operations and growth across multi-country teams and at a heart of the organization. This is an international position and you will travel once a month to the different locations of Formica.

Candidate profile*

  • Master’s degree, preferably in business
  • Experience with HR consulting, talent development or learning & development
  • At least 7 years’ experience in an international large-corporate setting
  • Experience in manufacturing and/or industrial companies
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills
  • Fluent in English; Finnish is a plus

* Research shows that while male candidates feel confident enough to apply when they meet about 60% of the requirements, female candidates only apply when they tick every box. So if this role has your name on it, but you’re not sure about the criteria, we still want to hear from you.
