Top of Minds Executive Search for Catawiki

The organisation

Catawiki is the most-visited curated marketplace for special objects in Europe. Every week, the platform puts on offer 65,000 items from around the globe in more than 80 categories, such as collectables, art, design, jewelry, watches, and classic cars, attracting 10 million unique users every month. Catawiki’s 200+ in-house experts carefully select and value the best items to auction, ensuring that people can easily discover and buy special objects that help them fulfil their passions.

“A piece of the moon, a complete dinosaur skeleton, the Pope’s hat, the world’s smallest book, we come across extraordinary objects every day!”

Founded in 2008 by René Schoenmakers and Marco Jansen with a vision to make special and hard-to-find objects more accessible, Catawiki has evolved into a large and healthy online marketplace, operating in 45 different markets. In 2019, Catawiki generated a gross merchandising value close to €350 million, with 27% year-on-year growth. Moreover, it was the first Benelux company to receive an investment from Accel Partners and Lead Edge Capital (first VC investors in Facebook, Dropbox, Spotify, and Alibaba).

Catawiki’s seven offices house a dynamic, open and fast-growing organization of almost 600 people. It has a hands-on culture and tries to maintain its start-up mentality, while offering a casual and friendly environment. The company offers the flexibility of partial remote working within a two-hour time difference with The Netherlands.

The position

To improve the buyer’s and seller’s experience during and after transaction, the Group Product Manager takes global payments and shipping to the next level. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced product manager to improve fulfilment operations in a fast-growing company that literally sells a piece of the moon, a complete dinosaur skeleton, and the Pope’s hat

The Group Product Manager is responsible for payments and shipping, also called the Fulfilment vertical. This vertical has three teams, focused on the check-out experience, the shipment integration, and the fintech (all back-office activity) respectively. The challenge for Fulfilment is Catawiki’s cross-border nature and the variety in local payments systems, transaction rules, carrier partners, regulations, and tax. The Group Product Manager’s key objective is to make Catawiki more international. This involves driving the long-term strategic direction of the Vertical and leading strategic projects, as well as contributing to the execution of some key projects. In addition, the Group Product Manager is responsible for leading the teams and mentoring the product managers towards their full potential.

In particular, the Group Product Manager is focused on improving the buyer’s and seller’s user experience. Buyers come to Catawiki for the unique objects on display, while sellers go on Catawiki to access a large community of enthusiasts. The platform is still a marketplace and therefore has sellers with very different levels of maturity, which may cause friction in the user experience. It is because of clever payment and shipping solutions that people come back. The Group Product Manager translates user & business needs into product roadmaps that reflect customer insights, stakeholder input, and company goals. Here, knowing how to balance big-picture thinking with attention to detail in execution is key.

The position of Group Product Manager is a high visibility role in a key strategic area for Catawiki and reports directly to the VP of Product. Close collaboration and alignment with stakeholders in legal, finance, CX and other functions for both strategy and implementation are expected.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced product manager with an appetite for building and improving the global payments & shipments operations of a company where you can truly buy a golden Lego brick, a hair of Napoleon Bonaparte, or one of Michael Jackson’s famous white hats.

Candidate profile*

  • University degree
  • At least 5 years’ experience in product management
  • At least 2 years’ experience in managing people or leading a team
  • Experience in a fast-growing online company, background in fintech or consumer shipment experience is highly desirable
  • Strong stakeholder management skills

* Research shows that while male candidates feel confident enough to apply when they meet about 60% of the requirements, female candidates only apply when they tick every box. So if this role has your name on it, but you’re not sure about the criteria, we still want to hear from you.
