AkzoNobel’s Paints and Coatings (P&C) adds color and value to people’s lives with a full range of interior and exterior decoration and protection products for the trade, industrial and consumer markets. As authorities on color we aim to provide all our customers with a great color experience and a fantastic finish. Our range includes paints, lacquers and varnishes, as well as products for surface preparation (pre-deco products).

The position

P&C incorporates a Reporting Group of three full time employees located in Arnhem, the Netherlands. This group is responsible for delivering consolidated financial reporting to corporate management and external entities.

Within this context, your mission in this role is to manage the Reporting Group so that it performs the successful drawing up of internal and external reports. As such, the role requires in-depth IFRS knowledge (including interpretation of IFRS in practice) and demonstrable experience of effective people management.

The Reporting Group reports to the Director Specialist Accounting & Governance and has frequent contacts with: Director Accounting & Reporting, Group Controller, CFO, Director Investor Relations, Director Corporate Communications.

Tasks & responsibilities 

This is a high profile role in which you are responsible for delivering high quality internal and external financial statements and reports including annual financial statements and quarterly and monthly reports.

The drive for quality is the center of your focus. This is in terms of compliance with IFRS and alignment with peers and other companies, as well as with regard to processes (on time, first time right) and inputs, for which you coordinate quality reviews.

Further, you respond to management information needs and implement improvements as required. You also act as an IFRS expert in project teams and/or on an ad hoc basis, and you take the lead/take part in IFRS projects such as implementation of new guidance.

Another core focus is to lead/take part in other departmental projects, and to display and fulfill AkzoNobel’s commitment to continuous improvement.

All of this requires you to work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. They include various levels of AkzoNobel management as you understand and meet their information needs. You also work with the Consolidation Group to understand and explain our financial performance both internally and externally, and with Economic Affairs in order to acquire meaningful explanations of business performance.

Further, you work with Communications and Investor Relations on the external quarterly and annual reports, and with external auditors and other third parties as required.

The Code of Insider Trading is applicable to this job, requiring you to embody the highest levels of ethical standards and integrity as you handle confidential information.

Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess all the following attributes:

  • MSc in Economics or similar, with a degree in accounting and 8 -10 years of reporting and IFRS experience, including experience with one of the Big4 accounting firms;
  • Inspirational people manager who can get the best out of departmental staff and manage the Reporting Team;
  • Able to work in an exposed environment (Supervisory Board, Executive Committee, other corporate management);
  • Able to balance reporting requirements by embodying a service-focused approach whilst challenging requests when necessary;
  • Able to stand in for Director Specialist Accounting & Governance or Director Accounting & Reporting when necessary;
  • Excellent communication and (report) writing skills including fluent written and spoken English and, ideally, Dutch.
