The Organisation

The ordinary shares of Brit Insurance Holdings N.V. (Brit Insurance) are listed on the London Stock Exchange. Brit Insurance changed domicile from the UK to the Netherlands in December 2009. Brit Insurance ordinary shares were exchanged for depositary interests listed on the London Stock Exchange.

The Dutch holding company will be subject to the corporate governance framework of the UK Financial Services Authority and the Dutch Authority for Financial Markets in respect of the depositary interests. UK Group subsidiaries will continue to be UK domiciled.

The Position

To take responsibility for internal audits throughout the business (both in the UK and overseas), with particular emphasis on Head Office areas. In this way, the Senior Internal Audit Manager should be able to provide independent assurance to the Audit Committee, EMC and the business that major risks affecting Brit Insurance are being managed appropriately by means of an effective control framework.

To deputise for the Head of IA when the Head of IA is absent or not available.

To develop and implement the appropriate policies and guidelines for the effective ongoing operation of Internal Audits in the Head Office, and also in Gibraltar and Luxembourg. This element will include some regular travel to the offices stated above, and some regular travel to the UK office.

Principal Accountabilities:

To review and assess the adequacy of the mechanisms in place for identifying, analysing and ensuring key risks within Brit Insurance are managed within Group Risk Appetite with the aim of providing assurance to key customers over the efficacy of the control environment at Brit Insurance.

To negotiate acceptance of findings and recommendations with management. Thereafter, produce Internal Audit reports to a professional standard (for the consumption of management; the Executive and the Non-Executive Directors; the External Auditors; and external parties including regulators), in the format agreed with the Head of Internal Audit and Audit Committee.

To liaise with the internal auditor responsible for following up on the completion of audit recommendations.

To recommend and adopt Group philosophies in respect of the execution of the Internal Audit activity as set out by the Group Head of Internal Audit (HIA) and agreed by the Group Audit Committee (AC).

Management/Co-ordination of Internal Audit Team Activities

Education and skills

  • Good overall educational standard with relevant professional qualification including the following: ACA or equivalent financial qualification and Degree educated
  • A high level of understanding of the controls expected to be in place in a group, to manage risk in accordance with Tax specific structures
  • A good understanding and appreciation of the risks inherent in the above structures
  • Familiarity with operational Risk Management techniques, including the concepts of risk appetite, risk register, risk scoring and prioritisation, control risk self assessment and risk committees
  • Experienced working within professional audit
  • Prior experience in the planning and execution of work to provide assurance over the effectiveness, operation and documentation of internal controls
  • Awareness of financial accounting and reporting standards, including IFRS
  • Proficient at producing professionally written audit reports
  • Assertive and competent in taking ownership of any given review and undertaking the assignment from inception straight through to completion
