Our client is a European based retailer, with the Dutch business being one of the most successful and steadily growing. More than 1.500 employees in the stores and 100 in the head office in the Netherlands, altogether contribute to the flourishing success of the company. The organization has concrete ambitions and plans to further expand in the coming years.

The position

The Director Finance & Operations is responsible for the development of the strategic financial and operational policy and planning of the Dutch entity, in charge of all matters related to Finance, Legal, IT, Procurement and Property Management. As sparring partner of the Managing Director and as member of the Management Team, the Finance Director also offers strategic input for decision making within the organization in general, contributes to the overall management of the business and supports the realization of the expansion plans. Based in the Utrecht area, the Director Finance & Operations leads and inspires a team of 20 professionals.

Candidate profile

Background and experience

  • Academic degree, preferably in Finance, Economics, Business Administration or related discipline.
  • 13+ years of work experience, of which 5+ years in a broad Finance Director position or as Operations Director with financial responsibility of €200+ million.
  • At least 3 years’ practice in a senior finance role in the retail industry, ideally gained at an internationally operating A-brand.
  • Familiarity with policy and implementation in the fields of finance & control, as well as legal affairs, automation & digitalization, property management and procurement.
  • Fluency in both Dutch and English is a must. Fluency in German is a strong plus; basic command of German with the willingness and capability to learn the language (quickly) could also suffice.

  • Sturdy, entrepreneurial and pioneering. Combines high level strategy with practice. Able to create a vision and translate these into concrete solutions. Doesn’t shy away from being hands-on and  pragmatic to roll up the sleeves him/herself.
  • Proactive change manager who leads by example and steers people along to reach great results. Eye for continuous improvement.
  • Team oriented people manager that is inspiring, motivating and empowering.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills; able to liaise with internal and external people, at all levels.
