The position

AkzoNobel's Specialty Chemicals (SC) business provides a wide range of high quality and sustainable ingredients that are integral to numerous key industrial processes worldwide. SC is a leading producer of Ethylene and Sulfur Derivatives (ESD).

In order to meet our growth ambitions ESD is investing in its assets globally. The investments are part of the longer term strategic development plan for SC. Success will depend among other on the highest levels of HSE knowledge and project management expertise, as we seek to maintain our outstanding reputation in this area.

Within this context, your mission in this position is to assume overall responsibility for delivery of the technical parts of the investment project, starting from the pre-project completion.

Tasks & responsibilities

This is a high profile position in which you perform wide-ranging project management responsibilities and deliver results in line with the agreed quality, budget and timeline. In doing so you ensure that the project is in line with corporate, business unit, and sub-business unit strategy. It is possible to be based at AkzoNobel sites in either Amsterdam, Arnhem, or in Germany.

Thus you define the approach for each of the areas/functions in the project in the different project phases, safeguarding the functional requirements and project deliverables. You conduct risk management assessments and initiate risk mitigation actions.

In managing the project you respond to proposed scope changes and work closely with the project champion and Steering Committee especially also in the case of major change requests.

Further, you define the site organization, including implementation (hiring and training including functional experts), and organize all required permits and the license to operate. You also decide in cooperation with the Steering Team on the involvement of Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management contractors, and you organize Steering Team meetings.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) is a key responsibility and you are responsible for HSE during construction, ensuring that HSE management systems are at required level from start-up and acting as the primary contact for corporate HSE.

As one of your tasks, you initiate Hazard Studies in the Commissioning and Start-up (CSU) phase. Following CSU you perform project evaluation, communicate findings and suggestions for improvement to the appropriate work processes.

On an ongoing basis you provide reports and status updates on HSE, planning, budget and quality, and you organize assurance reviews and tollgate meetings. You also ensure that operating instructions, maintenance plans and procedures are prepared and that trainings are given and that all project work is properly documented.

Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess all the following attributes:

  • A strong Chemical Engineering background including relevant qualifications and certificates;
  • Demonstrable evidence of excellent Project Management skills for large and complex investment projects;
  • Proven experience with investment projects execution in Germany is preferred;
  • Outstanding stakeholder management skills;
  • Experience working with different cultures;
  • Strong communication skills including fluent written and spoken English and, ideally, German.
