AkzoNobel

A highly influential and global insurance role for a skilled and ambitious financial professional

AkzoNobel has a passion for paint. We are experts in the proud craft of making paints and coatings, setting the standard in color and protection since 1792. Our world class portfolio of brands – including Flexa, International, Sikkens and Interpon – is trusted by customers around the globe.

As a complex global international organization with multiple business units, suppliers and customers we are exposed to a wide range of risks. The AkzoNobel Insurance Department (AIS) has a global mandate to arrange and execute risk transfer of insurable risks and in doing so it makes use of an in house insurance broker and several captive (internal) insurance companies.

Within this context, your mission in this role is to perform both the management and financial control of these captives, driving their efficiency and ensuring the highest levels of compliance. In addition to day to day operations this requires you to investigate and oversee options such as the further outsourcing, restructuring and or sale of the (legacy) captives where viable or necessary. You also act as the financial conscience of the insurance department and main driver of all type of financial and control processes.

As such, this is an attractive role for someone with a sound Finance/Control background – probably within an insurance company or broker – and a real passion for insurance. You will form a key part of AIS as you perform broad channel management and ensure that financial processes between insurance companies, the internal captives, Treasury Accounting and Operations, and AIS run smoothly. Moreover, you interact regularly with our insurance team in the US, our treasury hubs in Shanghai and Sao Paolo and GBS (Global Business Support) roles in Poland and India.

Is this a challenge that matches your profile as a highly analytical problem solver and leader with an advanced capacity to think and operate in an international environment? Do you have the ability to analyze, organize, summarize and articulate complex financial information for decision-making? Can you demonstrate powerful consulting and negotiating skills? Above all, do you have a strong business process focus and know what it takes to make a real difference within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?

If you offer all this and more we invite you to apply for the position of

Controller – Insurance & Captive Management

The role and its responsibilities

This role is based at our regional HQ in Arnhem, the Netherlands, but you will be able to work remotely for some of the time.

Your core task is to manage and monitor the internal captives, acting as Insurance Controller in terms of budget monitoring, administration and premium allocation.

Compliance is also central to the role. You are responsible for ensuring that we remain up to date with, and observant of, all relevant rules and laws. This is with particular regard to Solvency II and you oversee the structuring of the annual ORSA (Own Risk and Solvency Assessment).

Good communication and networking skills are essential as you interact with a wide range of internal and external parties such as other insurance companies, brokers, consultants, external captive managers etc. It is also important that you maintain a good network with supervisory bodies such as the FSA (Financial Services Authorities e.g. DNB De Nederlandsche Bank).

Business Process Redesign

Following recent developments at AkzoNobel i.e. the separation of the two companies and the shift of back office activities to other countries, it is essential that we 'reinvent' our business processes. You will be at the heart of this process in terms of providing insurance process leadership for all insurance processes including documenting and updating this in the Administrative Organization/Internal Control manual.

Further, as a skilled finance professional you support/advise hierarchical managers on performance and participate in strategic projects. You also advise the board of directors and the supervisory board of the Dutch captive (e.g. advising on risk appetite and participation of the captive in AkzoNobel’s global insurance programs) and the board of directors of the outsourced captives.

At all times you act with appropriate regard to the company’s risk appetite and ability to absorb risk, always focusing on risk that could endanger the balance sheet and deploying your financial knowledge and skills in the broadest sense to serve AkzoNobel’s business objectives.

It is expected that after working successfully in this role for a few years you can move on to another international, financial or managerial function within AkzoNobel.

Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess all of the following attributes:

  • Master’s degree or higher in a financial area;
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in Finance/Control;
  • Open minded, proactive and results driven people manager, leader and team player;
  • Innovation and continuous improvement skills;
  • Able to apply a service oriented client focus with regard to our BUs:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills including excellent written and spoken English and, ideally, Dutch.
